Project Battambang is an overseas community service project organized by students from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. The project was created in response to the ongoing struggles of the people in the rural districts of Cambodia. In 2010, five Year Two medical students, mentored by Dr Ong Yew Jin, recruited a team of 25 medical students and started serving the district of Poipet in the Banteay Meanchey province of Cambodia, where they identified a great need for proper healthcare and education services.
The team aimed to supplement local primary healthcare services by conducting health screenings, while concurrently developing sustainable healthcare programmes for the community. To supplement the screenings, the team introduced health education programmes to impart vital healthcare knowledge to the locals.
In 2011, the team implemented a survey process to evaluate the effectiveness and relevance of our initiatives. Besides these, Project Battambang also decided to capitalize on the talents of Cambodian students and develop them through scholarships and teacher support programmes.
Today, Project Battambang reaches out to 4 villages in the rural areas of Poipet. Through new partnerships and collaborations, Project Battambang seeks to develop local health support infrastructure in villages and grow its scholarship programme in schools, in the years to come.
